After yet another incident, this time atÌý,Ìýour community is left reeling.ÌýOnce again,ÌýwhenÌýJews gatherÌýin our sacred places,Ìýwe areÌýinfiltrated by haters. Once again, when we want to develop solidarity with our neighbors,ÌýprotestersÌýarrive toÌýdrive ourÌýcommunitiesÌýapart.ÌýOnce again, the Jewish community of our city is beside itself at the tepid response of our electedÌýofficials.ÌýÌýÌý
From the streets of New York to the streets of Los Angeles, our Jewish communities are under assault.ÌýGrowingÌýthreatsÌýseekÌýtoÌýdisrupt our lives, prevent us from exercisingÌýour constitutional rights, and destroy our indigenous connection to our homeland, Israel.ÌýÌý
Last June,Ìýafter an attack on a peaceful gathering of JewsÌýatÌýAdas Torah synagogue,ÌýÌýurgently calling for more security at our local Jewish institutions, synagogues, and schools.ÌýNothing has improved and the situation has only become more dire and more urgent.ÌýÌýÌý
How long must we wait until these “protests†at our houses of worship turn violent and deadly?ÌýWhat is it going to take for this scourgeÌýto stop?ÌýWe must not wait for more violence to act.ÌýThe time to act is NOW.ÌýThis moment demands more than symbolic gestures and verbal assurances. First isÌýtraining,Ìýwhere we provide, for free, theÌýlatestÌýsafety and security protocols to make sites harder targets.Ìý Second,Ìýwe conductÌýphysical risk assessments,Ìýwhere CSIÌýidentifiesÌýkey vulnerabilities.ÌýThird, isÌýinformation sharing and analysis.ÌýUsing ourÌýstate-of-the-artÌýAnalysis Center, weÌýcoordinateÌýinformation with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies,ÌýandÌýlocal security organizations 24/7.ÌýÌý
Fourth,ÌýisÌýadvocacy.ÌýWhile we appreciate the support of many elected officials, we needÌýto mobilize our community to demand change to protect our community.ÌýWe need real commitmentsÌýtied toÌýmeasurable outcomes.ÌýI am calling on our Mayor, our City Councilmembers,Ìýand our state representativesÌýto do more.ÌýÌý
We’veÌýbeen told many times that existing laws cannot prevent the actions at WilshireÌýBoulevardÌýTempleÌýorÌýAdas Torah.ÌýWe’veÌýbeen told that there are not enough police to protect Jews in synagogue both here in and New York.ÌýWe’veÌýbeen told, by elected officials, thatÌýJews congregating to explore and celebrateÌýourÌýrelationship with Israel [untruthfully]Ìýviolates international law.ÌýOr,ÌýthatÌýthe solution to the question of Jewish safety isÌýsimplyÌýtoÌýsit down in dialogue toÌý“hear the other side.â€ÌýForcing us to listen to the demands of those who want to use violence against us isÌýabusive.ÌýIt’sÌýblaming Jews for being Jewish.Ìý
Protecting our community is foundational toÌýJewsÌýfeelingÌýsafe enough to expressÌýour First Amendment rights,ÌýlikeÌýeverybody elseÌýin America.
